In other words, clear and articulate with some warmth or almost a compressed sound-not necessarily a bright, biting single-coil tone. As a long-time Strat player, I'm especially fond of the sound of a Strat neck pickup, and the sounds of positions 2 and 4. I play mostly clean and tend to prefer the sound of single-coils.
I'm not sure why, because I really like the tone of P90's.
